General Scholarship Information

The scholarship office is dedicated to helping undergraduate students with scholarship needs. The scholarship office awards undergraduate students with need-based scholarships, processes all scholarships for the university and hosts a list of outside scholarships that are available.

At Texas Tech University, scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need. Financial need is rarely the primary factor considered, but it is often used to make a decision among equally qualified finalists. Many scholarships have additional qualifications such as:
        -high school attended
        -current major
        -county you live in
        -extra-curricular activities etc.

Texas Tech University distributes over $13 million in scholarship money each year. These scholarships are from both institutional and private sources.

INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Institutional scholarships at Texas Tech are provided by scholarship donors. These scholarships are awarded by colleges, academic departments, and the financial aid department within Texas Tech.

COMPETITIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NON-RESIDENT FEE WAIVERS
The recipient of a competitive institutional scholarship of at least $1000 for the academic year and/or summer for which the student is enrolled is entitled to pay in-state tuition rates. That means non-resident students may receive the benefit of resident tuition. An official Texas Tech University scholarship committee must award the scholarship and the recipient must compete with other students, including Texas residents. This amount could be a combination of several smaller scholarships from TTU that total $1000 or more, or one Texas Tech award of $1000.

PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Private scholarships are scholarships that are not controlled by the University, rather by the donors themselves. These scholarships are awarded through the individual donors and the money is sent to Texas Tech to be disbursed.

How They Are Disbursed

Scholarships are applied to your tuition bill each semester. The University must confirm that you have been accepted and have enrolled full time in courses before payment will be made. If you know that you will be enrolled less than full time, you will need to have your donor or department contact the scholarship office to approve payment of your scholarship(s).

If your scholarship arrives after your bill is already paid for the semester, or if the scholarship is more than your bill, a refund check will be issued to you. You can expect your refund to be mailed to your local address after the first day of classes. Most refunds arrive in 3 days. YOu may receive refunds through direct deposit by completing a direct deposit form at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/studentbusinessservices

If you receive the scholarship in cash and you are receiving any other type of financial aid, you are still obligated to notify us. We may be required to adjust your financial aid package. However, please note that we do not reduce the total amount of aid you are eligible to receive, we only adjust the type of aid. First, we will reduce any loans you may have been offered.

Occasionally, a donor will send the scholarship check directly to you. Do not include the check with your payments to the Student Business Services Office. Instead, forward the scholarship check to the Scholarship Office, and it will be processed accordingly (endorse checks made payable to you or both you and TTU before forwarding).

Please provide this form to your donor: Scholarship Donor Information (Adobe Acrobat File)

Outside Scholarships

The donor should send your scholarship check, made payable to Texas Tech University, and a cover letter to:

Texas Tech University
Scholarship Office
PO Box 45011
Lubbock, TX 79409-5011

The cover letter should include your name and social security number and directions for disbursement. It is also helpful to have your name and social security number on the check in the memo section of the check as well.

Some donors send checks co-payable to you and the University. This means you must go to the Student Business Services Office on or after the first day of class and sign the check before it can be applied to your tuition. This can cause unnecessary delays and may be an inconvenience to you. Checks made payable to Texas Tech on your behalf will enhance our ability to credit your account quickly.
